TV Rambles: Louie

After finishing Seinfeld a couple of months ago (read my review HERE), we watched another of Matt’s favourite comedy shows, Louie. In this show too, a popular stand-up comedian – Louis C.K. – plays a fictionalised version of himself. And the similarities with Seinfeld pretty much end here.

Louie appears to be a regular guy. He’s in his 40s and a recently divorced guy, juggling between the part-time care of his two young daughters and his night job as a stand-up comedian at a couple of clubs in New York. A good man, yet he has this aura of a… loser. His dating life has its ups and downs, his sexual life even more, and although he’s appreciated as a comedian, he seems to be stuck in a rut with no major prospects in the future.

Louie’s (or Louis C.K.’s) comedy style is dark. Very dark. He’s also self-deprecating. His stand-up is not after easy laughs. His way of speaking is as unassuming as his attire, but he often talks about delicate subjects like sex and religion in a provoking manner. The end result of his jokes is not just a happy burst of laughter but also bitterness and perhaps even discomfort.

TV Rambles: Seinfeld

Shortly before my exam, we finished watching all nine seasons of Seinfeld. It took us about two months of two to four episodes per night. It’s one of Matt’s favourite shows, while I had never watched one single episode. I had my doubts about it but by the second season, I was already hooked!

The show – which aired for the first time in 1989 – was written by two friends; stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and writer Larry David. Set in New York, it is based on their real-life experiences with friends and acquaintances and revolves around the life of – you guessed it – Jerry Seinfeld. Larry David was turned into George Costanza (played by Jason Alexander), Jerry’s self-loathing, idiotic friend. There are also Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Jerry’s confident ex-girlfriend/friend, and Kramer (Michael Richards), Jerry’s goofy, hipster neighbour.

TV Rambles: Welcome to Sweden

Back in January, a few weeks before we travelled to Sweden, I discovered by chance this TV series called Welcome to Sweden. We binge-watched all the 10 episodes of the first season and I really enjoyed it. It made me look forward to visiting the country and have a taste of what the protagonist was experiencing.

Yesterday we binge-watched it again, in preparation for the second season, which started airing on Sunday night in America.
