Sweden, My Love: a walk in the forest

Here I am writing about my impressions on my first trip to Sweden with my boyfriend Matt, which occurred between end of February and beginning of March 2015. We stayed in the county of Skåne (Scania): Malmö, Skurup and the surroundings; while also visiting Copenhagen in Denmark.

Day 9

On Sunday, we woke up to a glorious, sunny morning. The perfect weather for a visit to the forest in Svaneholm. We left by car and when we reached the famous underpass that had cheated us on Thursday, the hostess explained how we could still have walked on the road, only facing the oncoming traffic.

I couldn’t help but feel ashamed and angered because from that point, the road was short. We had been so close to Svaneholm! Anyhow, it was useless to feel bitter. The important thing was that I still had the chance to see this place.

Day 8

scrabbled_rambles_on_oresundWe woke up a little earlier than usual on Saturday and this time we had the hosts with us for breakfast. The weather was once again cloudy but I didn’t care too much because I knew that we were going to travel by car. During breakfast I was told of the plan for the day: a visit to Denmark’s National Aquarium in Kastrup and then a quick sightseeing trip and lunch in the heart of Copenhagen.

Farmor was coming with us, hence our first stop was in Malmö. Matt and I had a brief discussion on who was supposed to sit in the middle of the back seat – I thought it would be too awkward for me to sit very close to Farmor. In the end I won the debate and a scowling Matt had to sit in the middle, sandwiched between me and his grandma, for all the trip. All cramped inside our hosts’ electric car, we set off towards the Öresund bridge.

Day 6

The day when we weren’t supposed to stay with any relatives came and… we had no plan. We only had one general idea: to avoid taking the train and stay in Skurup, keeping it relaxed. But what is there to do and see in a small town of barely 8,000 inhabitants?

I did a quick search on Google from my phone but it’s difficult to find any information in English. I found out there were a couple of museums. The first one was Johanna Museet, showcasing vintage stuff. It wasn’t too far from the house but the way to take seemed complicated, involving crossing a busy road. About the second one, I discovered that we had walked in front of it everyday on our way to the train station but it seemed like a regular old home to me, I could not understand if it was really a museum or not. The only other option left was to visit Svaneholm, right at the outskirts. We checked the bus schedule and planned on leaving around noon.

Day 4

Peeking through the blinds on Tuesday morning revealed the best weather we had witnessed in Skurup since our first day in Sweden. The forecast for the day also looked promising. I went out of the house feeling elated because it meant that I would visit a nature park in Malmö and take nice, sunny pictures of it.

This time, I had the window seat on the train so to take photos of the different scenes we passed by. Most of what I saw was fields, trees and lonely cabins. Naturally, some photos did not come out good while being on the move. But I did manage to take some good ones when nearing the stop at stations and I also took a better look at the IKEA in Malmö Svågertorp (maybe someday I will go inside).

Day 3

Breakfast in Skurup

On Monday morning we woke up for the first time in an empty house. Our hosts had left for their jobs by 8:15am but not before leaving a pot full of freshly made coffee in the kitchen, together with a cute sticky note in which they encourage us to make use of all supplies in the fridge and cupboards. And that’s what we do. By then I had already formed a definite breakfast menu: two slices of bread, one with ham and one with either kaviar or räkost (prawn cheese) and a cup of Swedish coffee with just one or two teaspoons of sugar. Once I also tried liver paste on my bread; tasty but I can’t say that I go crazy for anything that has to do with liver!

Before I put on my coat, scarf and woolly hat, I run back to the kitchen to fill up my plastic bottle with tap water. I find it amazing how you can have as much water as you want from the tap without any fear. That’s an amount of money saved from the shopping bill at the supermarket.

Then we leave for Skurup train station. The destination, once again, is Malmö.
